Happy Mother’s Day!

For many families around the world and throughout history, it has traditionally been the mother who has the often thankless job of keeping the family and household running.

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity each year to remind Mom how much she is loved and to show our gratitude to her for playing such a crucial role in our lives.

How did Mother’s Day start?

Though the celebration of mothers can be traced back to Ancient Greece, part of the tradition originated in the United Kingdom and Europe. It was part of a celebration during Lent, called “Mothering Sunday”.

However, the modern version of Mother’s Day began in the United States in the early 1900s. Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in West Virginia in 1907, and campaigned for Mother’s Day to become a national holiday.

Eventually in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

When is Mother’s Day?

While many countries share the same day as the US, others pick different dates to celebrate.

For example, the UK follows the old tradition of Mothering Sunday, placing it in the 4th Sunday of Lent. Many Eastern-European countries choose to celebrate on March 8th, also known as International Women’s Day.

Meanwhile, some Middle-Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, celebrate Mother’s Day on the Spring Equinox.

How to celebrate Mother’s Day?

How can you show your appreciation for the maternal figures in your life?
Here are a few ideas:

Write a heartfelt letter

Sometimes the simplest gestures are the most meaningful.

Take the time to write a letter expressing your gratitude and love for your mother or maternal figure. This can be a touching and personal way to show your appreciation.

Plan a special outing

Whether it’s a picnic or a day trip, plan a special outing that your mother will enjoy. By spending quality time together, there’s plenty of chances to create new treasured memories!

Set up a breakfast or brunch date

Why not treat your dearest with a nice breakfast? Something simple would do, such as toast or a croissant with jam or fruit washed down with a nice cuppa. Not a morning person? How about preparing a sit-down brunch with cold cuts or fried goodies?

Volunteer or donate to a cause your mother cares about

If your mother is passionate about a particular cause or organization, consider volunteering your time or making a donation in her name. This can be a thoughtful way to show your support and honor her values.

Watch a movie or show together

Having a family gathering? Why not host a movie night with your favourite movies or TV shows? Want something to sip on when enjoying the show? Mix up a jug of popcorn taro!

No matter how you choose to celebrate Mother’s Day, remember the most important thing is to show your appreciation and gratitude.

These women have played a crucial role in shaping who you are, and it’s important to let them know how much you care!
